I was in Tokyo a little while ago and realized that I was seriously craving a good old fashioned salad. Since that doesn't really exist in Tokyo I had to improvise. Making great live fresh food out of your hotel room is easy but it helps know where to find a few basic things. I found it very hard to find the kind of salad I'm talking about any where in the city - you know the one with micro and macro greens, fresh peppers and cucumbers etc... so I went to the grocery store to see what I could drum up and this is what I found.
Some sort of spinach,
dill, carrots, avocado, very thin cucumbers!, plum tomatoes, lemon, sesame oil and sun dried tomatoes. I traveled with tahini, pumpkin seeds and sea salt and chipotle powder. If only I could keep my hotel this well stocked all the time - Thank goodness for empty mini bar fridges! I was in Japan for a while so I bought a fruit basket as well - I thought it was so cute!
On to the salad...
I mixed the tahini with lemon juice, water, chipotle powder and sesame oil (my chopstick skills are rough but are getting better!)
I chopped up all my veggies mixed them with my dressing and Voila a hotel room salad.
I felt that it needed a bit of salt so I through it some more sun dried tomatoes which totally did the trick. This was absolutely delicious and a staple while I was living in the hotel for a bit.
Tahini is tricky to find in certain parts of the world. If you are ambitious you can make it with the sesame seeds but i wasn't up for the challenge this time around and always try to travel with a little bottle in my suitcase for any sort of craving that might arrive!
When I can't get my hands on Tahini I would make a salad dressing out of avocados which always proves to be just a delicious, creamy and satisfying as another other bad for you salad dressing yum!
I think it's pretty easy to be creative and healthy while on the road - you just need to make sure you a few basics with you like a sharp knife, a bowl and a cutting mat I picked these all up at a little shop for less than $5.00 and it did the trick!
Cheers!
